IN The Scope of Things
August 2008 Volume 2 Issue 1
President’s Message: Dianna Burns
Can you believe the summer is already over? Where does the time go? The SGNA Annual Course in Salt Lake City was another hit. The speakers and presentations were awesome! The Annual Course has always been the best networking event of the year. Where else can you meet co-workers from all over the world, that work in the same specialty, and be able to discuss the same problems that we are all addressing locally? The course is in St. Louis, MO in 2009, Orlando, FL in 2010, and INDIANAPOLIS in 2011!!! Plan ahead and please join us!!!
We have a great INSGNA program scheduled for September in Evansville. Watch for the brochure! We are continuing to update the INSGNA website with important dates and plans for the brochure and registration to be available on line in the near future. Please check it out- www.insgna.org.
INSGNA will be sending two board members to the SGNA Leadership Conference in Chicago on October 3-4, 2008. This is an opportunity for the Board to learn more about the operations within SGNA and the process by which it functions-which we follow as well. As we continue to mentor new Board members this is another benefit of being a leader. Though we all lead busy lives, there are numerous leaders within our organization. I would like to encourage everyone to consider volunteering to participate in committee work and learn more about this great organization.
Suzanne Buchanan and myself have the privilege of sitting on the ABCGN Board. As facilities move toward obtaining Magnet Status we are seeing an increasing number of nurses interested in certification. This is a great opportunity for us to encourage and support our co-workers in growth of their professionalism with certification. SGNA has also developed an online tool for Associates-GI Technical Specialist (GTS) course and even newer yet-an Advanced Associate course! Please check out the SGNA website for more information- www.sgna.org.
I hope everyone had a good summer and I look forward to seeing you in Evansville in September.

INSGNA Website Update: Lea Anne Myers, President-elect
We continue to work with the website to make it more functional and up to date. We have run into some struggles with the calendar portion of the website which the web host is working on. Until that is corrected, however, we are unable to put new conference information on the calendar. On a positive note, the newsletters will be posted on the website for anyone to read. Please check the website periodically as we hope to get the calendar issue resolved in the next few weeks. This will be another great way to keep up on educational happenings around our region. If you have anything you would like to see added to the website please send me your ideas or information to my email address, drmfwin@msn.com.
Education Committee Report: LeaRae Herron-Rice, Chair
Everyday GI nurses and associates make big differences in how they provide care to their patients and families. The committee would like its membership to share examples of their units “Best Practices” at our next fall and spring conferences. You may share your ideas by providing a poster board or by sending/faxing your ideas to the education committee. The committee will compile the submissions and distribute them at the next meeting. If you plan to submit a poster board, please email the committee so space can be reserved for display.

Where Are They Now? Suzanne Buchanan, Historian
Mary Ann Titzer was the President of the INSGNA during the years of 1988 and 1989, the fourth President of our organization. She said that she felt if was important to be a part of the organization to bring regional and national education and information back to the Evansville area where she was the nurse manager of the GI department at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She also wanted to give credit to Dianna Burns, our current President, without all of her hard work and dedication, our INSGNA organization would not be on the successful track that it is on today.
Mary Ann was active at the National SGNA level and was involved in writing the very first Core Curriculum for GI Nurses. She also attended the annual national courses faithfully.
Mary Ann retired from St. Mary’s medical Center in 2000 from the job of nurse manager. She and her husband, Tom, still live in the same house that they raised their five children in. She said that their house was once too small, and now it is too large. Her children have successful careers, and she has four grandchildren. They are spread out over the country, so she and Tom enjoy traveling to visit them in New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Seattle. The entire family has recently gotten together for a tour/cruise in Canada and Alaska. Mary Ann and Tom will be traveling in December to Florida.
Our INSGNA appreciates everything that our past presidents have done to make our organization what it is today. GREAT JOB!
